In recent years, there's been a resurgence of all things
mid-century modern. One of my favorite
mid-century modern classics is the Sputnik light fixture. What is a Sputnik? Sputnik was actually the world's first
artificial Earth satellite. It was launched
on October 4, 1957 by the Soviet Union.
Soon thereafter the launch inspired the creation of NASA in the United
States, which in turn launched an infatuation with all things celestial, manifesting itself in design from textiles to furniture and accessories, with
iconic pieces including the Sputnik chandelier.
The classic setting for a Sputnik light fixture is in a
mid-century modern room. You will
commonly see it with brass arms, paired with medium toned woods and retro
colors, but it's not to say it can't work well in many other styles
either. This fixture has become a
favorite for designers in many applications, adding a playful addition to a
well composed room.
